The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is enduring water scarcity. This milestone arrives after grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that worsened wildfire risks and challenged its huge agribusiness.

A Chart Shows An Absence of Drought

The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program showed that the entire state is without drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from multiple significant storms that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their long-term norms.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a climate scientist.

After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations

The journey here included powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, resulting in significant overflow, power outages, and fatalities. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

As late as late December, areas like Modoc County were deemed unusually parched. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 finally erased those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

Yet, authorities caution that the end of drought status should not be confused with complete water security. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.

This mountain snow, which supplies about a third of the state's water supply as it runs off, is an essential component for the year ahead. State experts have emphasized that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” said a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health for the coming seasons.
