Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
