Purkiss, 38 years old, who is hailing from Greater Manchester, appeared before the Westminster court on Friday, and told the court he intended to contest the extradition. Sources suggest that he was taken into custody on Thursday evening. An arrest warrant for Purkiss was issued by a Nairobi court in September. The state attorneys told the Kenyan court that the accused had been facing a one count, of homicide, and that the Kenyan authorities would pursue his extradition to stand trial. He served formerly as a army medic with the Lancaster Regiment, the military regiment for the northwestern England, including on tours of Afghanistan. Wanjiru, 21 years old, a hairdresser who had a infant daughter, went missing after a night out, and her body was found 60 days later in the premises of the lodging where she had last been seen. No one had earlier been taken into custody or accused in connection to her demise. Purkiss’s arrest was the result of a recent detective probe, which came after a report in 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the media outlet contacted several serving and ex-military personnel in the unit. This inquiry has been led by Kenyan detectives, which, under a bilateral security treaty, retains jurisdiction in the case.
