The remains of a 34-year-old woman and her young daughter, 10 have been found inside freezing appliances in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were detected on the end of last week. The cooling units were placed behind a plasterboard wall in the dwelling, located in the Innsbruck area.

Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in June. The 55-year-old, a colleague of the Syrian woman, informed authorities last week that there had been an incident—but disputed murder.

Speaking to the media previously, a representative for the legal authorities said the pair were being detained on "high likelihood of intentional killing".

The identities of those concerned have not been disclosed by authorities, in accordance with national regulations.

Their going missing was initially flagged by the woman's cousin, who is based in Germany, on 25 July 2024.

Police stated the male associate informed them at the time she had taken an extended trip with her child to see her family in Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then discovered to be utilized abroad on multiple occasions.

But when officers entered the victim's residence, her smartphone was found.

A witness also stated hearing a disturbing sound in the dwelling, and shouts of "mama" on the occasion the mother and child were believed to have vanished.

A wider criminal probe was initiated, with investigators discovering several texts transmitted via the woman's phone—among them a notice of quitting to her employer and texts to the 55-year-old suspect.

Authorities stated a significant cash transfer was also sent to the suspect.

A senior police official informed the press on recently that a storage facility had been secured before the mother and child went missing and a freezing appliance had been positioned inside.

The two suspects extracted the freezer from the storage space on the date the victims went missing, she stated. And a seven days after, they purchased a second unit.

Officials say they believe this indicates the demise were premeditated.

"The reason for their demise was not identifiable due to the state of decomposition of the victims," the official said.

The prosecutor's spokesman—from the legal authorities—said the precise timeline is still unclear, but the bodies were expertly concealed and went unnoticed during a earlier inspection.

Although the suspects were arrested in June, it was not until the 12th of November that the 55-year-old acknowledged an event and to storing the victims. He rejects any intent to kill, officials confirmed.

In a related development, his brother admitted to a concealment but denied awareness of a killing.

The pair are currently in custody awaiting trial in detention centers in Innsbruck and Salzburg, around 117 miles (189km) apart.

Via a shared communication, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative stated the "alleged double murder... constitutes the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and reveals a heartless setup".

"Females of all ages are falling victim to homicide due to the sole reason that they are female," they went on to say.

"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and widespread concern that we must combat firmly."
