🔗 Share this article An Tale of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was I would book lodging upon arrival, but when I arrived, a major event was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked. Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I considered the possibility of just sleep at the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate 24 hours. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded public transport and found myself drifting in the direction of the casino, believing I might spend the evening in a place that stayed open all night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak to succeed at the admissions interview the next morning, but as a broke student, I couldn’t afford. The world needs more folks who show such kindness. Apparently, I appeared lost since a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city center and asked if I was OK. I explained my predicament and immediately she suggested I could crash on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: a leftover filled rolls she had from her evening job. This gave me the bathroom and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night. Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she undertook being a woman inviting a man she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under my male privilege bubble and did not consider to the potential danger. As a dad now, I’m amazed she took that chance – but still incredibly thankful. I never did study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish karma has repaid her act of kindness many times over. We could all use more folks with such compassion.
