A Standout Year for Kicking Balls

I never truly grasped before I observed the game with my father. The moment arrived on a trip to my parents' house at the peak of the global tournament excitement. Azzurri were in the running, and that meant everything to my father, an newcomer from Abruzzo. Although I always found the match tedious, his excitement was completely captivating that it held my attention to the screen. The puzzle pieces clicked that day, suddenly understanding all the captivating subtleties the sport had to offer and embracing its profound importance. It was crucial that Italy emerge victorious.

It's challenging to explain the appeal of athletic competitions to those who are indifferent. One requires to experience that epiphany where the fog clears for yourself — or, as a minimum, you need the right guide present to clarify the confusing regulations and reveal the core essence of the activity. As 2025 demonstrated that this is something a video game can pull off. 2025 delivered three exceptional soccer games that dissected the sport in very different, approachable ways.

The Heartfelt Narrative: Despelote

The pivotal entry of that triple is Despelote. This narrative experience is a autobiographical narrative set in Ecuador. On the surface, it's a fairly standard story about a child growing up in the turn of the millennium and forging his voice. Yet, all of this takes place against the backdrop of an all-consuming historic moment: The national squad qualified for the World Cup, and it is the paramount thing happening in the everyone's lives. Football games are on every television screen. They play during family events. It's all anyone can discuss. Ball is life.

In this environment, we observe the young hero evolve. He isn't only learning where he belongs at a social gathering, but where he belongs within his culture as well. The beautiful game is inextricably linked to his sense of self, and it's through the game that he realizes himself as a devoted Ecuadorian. It's the closest a video game has ever come to giving me insight into my own dad and the reason he was so captivated to the World Cup all those years ago.

The Bodily Mastery: Rematch

Whereas Despelote focuses on the societal importance of soccer, two other games from this year capture the nuances of the game itself in more approachable ways than FIFA-style simulations. Rematch, the most recent game from the developers behind Sifu, digs into the bodily control of soccer. This multiplayer game reimagines the sport by recasting it as a fast-paced battle played between small teams. It draws cues from titles like Rocket League to create an arcade-style battle that's focused on tight teamwork and masterful touch.

I was utterly hooked with Rematch for a few weeks this summer. On the surface, it felt simple during my early sessions, but each occasion I returned to it, I found more depth. Beyond basic kicking and passing, I learned how to dodge around the other team to evade a takeover. I figured out how to let go of the ball to stop someone from knocking it away. I drilled my rainbow flicks until I could elevate a stylish move into a effective defensive tactic. These myriad subtle techniques taught me about soccer in ways I wouldn't have been able to grasp as a passive observer. I walked away with a greater understanding for the central part athletic prowess plays in the game, acknowledging what a athletically impressive pursuit it truly is.

The Strategic Mind: Pup Champs

Whereas Rematch showcased the athletic dimension of soccer, Pup Champs charmingly demonstrated the cerebral side. This recent release from the developers behind Golf Peaks, Pup Champs is a tactical soccer strategy title starring canine athletes. Every challenge asks you to navigate a few pups on a field and kick the ball into a net. Straightforward, but the twist lies in the fact that each pup has a unique kick pattern, they can only travel a limited number of spaces, and there are blockers to navigate around. Solving a level demands strategic foresight and a masterful understanding of the playing area. It feels like you're coaching a amateur soccer team, devising the perfect tactics to steer your dogs to victory. It's not a realistic version of the game by any means, but it's a delightful companion piece to Rematch.

A New Perspective

Naturally, other plenty of releases about soccer, as expected. Major series arrived right on schedule and fan-favorite series made their highly anticipated debut. Yet, thanks to these three games, I spent 2025 thinking about soccer more than I have since. Interactive experiences helped me visualize the physical artistry that goes into a game I'll realistically never be proficient in (too much running!) and understand the reasons soccer matters to millions of people. It's a small development in game design I would love to see persist, with more creative takes to sports games that aim to express the spirit of a game rather than replicating it 1:1. And, a handful of additional games did exactly that for various games this year, whether it was the open-world cycling adventures of Wheel World or the dreamlike odyssey of Skate Story. If you don't typically enjoy sports, there are increasingly more games out there that are ready to bring you into the fandom.
